Study Support: Mental Health

What is Mental Health?

The term ‘mental health’ refers to your emotional and psychological wellbeing, and it influences the way you feel and think, as well as your behaviour. Having good mental health can improve your quality of life and it can also help you perform better at university.

It is important to remember that mental health problems are part of everyday life, and they can manifest themselves in many different ways. Mind has put together a detailed list of mental health problems which include a description of their symptoms, possible causes and treatments: Mind - Types of mental health problems

Self-Care Tips

Mindfulness is a practice you can learn which involves staying in the present, and paying attention to your body, feelings, and surroundings. Mindfulness can help you to feel calmer and be more self-aware; moreover, it can help you deal with unhelpful thoughts and understanding yourself better.

The amazing thing about this technique is that it can be practised anywhere at any time, you do not need any equipment, and it can be integrated with meditation and breathing exercises.

To get more from your mindfulness exercises, try to:

  • pick a regular time to practise

  • practise in a place where you feel comfortable

  • observe and accept your feelings and thoughts, without judgement

If you are a beginner, you may want to start practising mindfulness while listening to guided sessions. Oxford Mindfulness Centre has created Mindfulness and Meditation Audio Sessions that can be accessed for free. In addition to these resources, as a BPP student, you have free access to LinkedIn Learning and its wide range of courses,  such as these Mindfulness courses:
