Study Support: Turnitin

Introduction to Tunitin

Turnitin Logo

Turnitin is an originality checking tool used by BPP to support students with original writing for their submission. Turnitin is intended as a supporting tool and as such students must be allowed to submit written assignments for formative assessment with sufficient time before their summative assessment to enable them to get the feedback on their writing in the form of the originality report.

Pre-submission checklist

Prior to submission:

  • Read the assignment brief
    • Check you have understood the specific requirements, such as file format, file size and any specific instructions from your tutor
  • Check your file is in an acceptable format within the file size limits
  • Correctly name your file according to your assignment brief
  • Check for hidden text
    • Turnitin can detect manipulated characters or special characters
  • DO NOT submit a password protected file, this can prevent Turnitin from processing the file.
  • Ensure you have accepted or rejected all changes and turn off track changes before you submit your file

Ensure you have chosen the correct file for submission, and contact your tutor in advance of the deadline for submission if you believe you have made a mistake.

Click for list of other accepted file types:

  • Adobe PostScript
  • Plain text (TXT)
  • Rich Text Format (RTF)
  • OpenOffice (ODT)
  • Hangul Word Processor (HWP and HWPX)
  • Google Docs via Google Drive

Please note:

  • The submitted version of an Excel file will display in Turnitin as if it had been saved as a PDF from Excel. Pay attention to the preview shown during the submission process to make sure the file appears as intended. The appearance of the file can be controlled by editing the page setup and print area settings for the file prior to saving it in Excel
  • Turnitin will not accept PDF image files, forms, or portfolios, files that do not contain highlightable text (e.g. a scanned file - usually an image), or documents containing multiple files.  Turnitin will only accept PDF files created with Adobe Acrobat software or Microsoft Word 365.
  • Do not upload Google Doc (.gdoc) files directly as the file does not store the document, but contains a reference to it online, in Google Docs. You must download the file from Google Docs and then submit.

Receiving your receipt

Make sure you download your digital receipt. This is proof of your submission.

Resubmission

If your assignment allows for resubmission, you can open a new submission window by clicking the upload paper icon (a tray with an up arrow) for your previous submission.

Resubmission is only possible before the assignment deadline. After that point, you will need to contact your School to request a new submission attempt.

Please be aware that resubmitting will completely overwrite your past submission, including the submission date. Your previous submission will not be recoverable.

Remember to download a new receipt for any resubmissions.
