Artificial Intelligence (AI) Guidance

Data protection and copyright

Be careful with the data that you submit to AI tools. In the same way that you shouldn't post someone's confidential data on the open internet, you also should not input confidential data into an AI tool. You should also not submit any intellectual property belonging to someone whose permission to do so you have not sought, this includes any ouputs from any of our library resources. By adding copyrighted material into an AI tool, you are quite likely making illegitimate copies of that material.

Energy consumption involved in AI searches

There have been suggestions that asking AI tools questions can use up substantially more energy than simply searching the internet using search engines like Google. This is worth considering when you have a choice as to which method you use to find out information. However, AI is relatively new still, and so the exact impact it is likely to have on energy usage is still being determined. This is a fast changing area, and AI tools are seemingly becoming more energy-efficient over time. There is plenty to read on the topic including articles like this one from Nature, "How much energy will AI really consume? The good, the bad and the unknown" by Sophia Chen.
