EUROPEAN UNION

Official website of the European Union.  Find out about the EU, EU by topic, doing business in the EU, documents and statistics and a link through to EU Law.

OFFICIAL JOURNAL

The Official Journal of the European Union (OJ) made available via EUR-Lex.  Find electronic copies of all Official Journals since the first edition. The OJ is published every day from Tuesday to Saturday in the official EU languages. There are 2 main series:  L (legislation) and C (information and notices).  There are three subseries, CA, LI and CI. 

International Materials

  • This page outlines resources for international law – materials that may be useful for Comparative Law, Constitutional & Administrative Law, Public International Law, Pro Bono work, and dissertations requiring international content.
  • There are links to EU materials too, and information about tracking the legal implications of Brexit.

  • The Library & Information Service aims to provide what is needed for your regular studies.    Occasionally a dissertation topic might be more unusual and research students may wish to take advantage of the British Library collection via our Inter Library Loan Service.  Please see the Online Library: Loan Services.

Key Online Resources

The key resources described here are a mixture of online subscription resources and freely available resources.  The subscription resources include LexisLibrary, Westlaw and HeinOnline and in other parts of this page we link to pages in Practical Law.  If you find yourself in a situation where you do not have access to subscription online resources for international materials, we have included some free resources too.  When using freely available resources it is good practice to carefully evaluate materials for currency, authority and accuracy

Access cases such as Canada Supreme Court Reports, Early American Case Law and coverage from the U.S. Supreme Court Library, as well as international journals, materials and other historical international law content.

HG.org was founded by Lex Mundi, a large network of independent law firms. The objective of HG.org is to make law, government and related professional information easily and freely accessible to the legal profession, businesses, and consumers (information derived from ‘About Us’ section on the website).  

Choose the International link from the home page, and a number of jurisdictions will be listed. 

The practical application of the law in an international setting: Cross border topics, international practice areas (Arbitration, EU and Competition Law) and Q&A’s.  From the Home Page select International from the choice of Practice Areas, Resources, or International. 

Access International Materials including Australia, Canada, European Union, Hong Kong, Korea and the UK.  There is a further link to ‘other international jurisdictions’.  Please note the user interface will be different to that of Westlaw UK, so you may wish to consult the Westlaw International Student User Guide provided.

World Legal Information Institute: provides free, independent and non-profit access to worldwide law including a country by country listing (for constitutions, cases and legislation etc.).  It also has an international and privacy section. Select any country for more links: content will vary from constitutions, courts, legislation, Government departments to any information about a particular subject e.g. competition law.  Check the ‘About’ section for information on organisations and Legal Information Institutes who have contributed to this site.

Accessing other collections

  • The Institute of Advanced Legal Studies FLAG database is a Foreign Law Guide giving details of holdings of foreign, international and comparative law in the UK’s academic, national and specialist libraries.  Admittance would be at the discretion of each library depending on its policy regarding student or visitor access.
